Los Premios ANNIE son entregados desde 1972 por la rama de la INTERNATIONAL ANIMATED FILM ASSOCIATION (Asociación Internacional de Cintas Animadas) denominada ASIFA-HOLLYWOOD. Originalmente estaban destinados a aquellas personas que contribuyeron a lo largo de su carrera al desarrollo de la animación. 20 años más tarde, empezarían a ser otorgados a la animación en general, con la creación de categorías como la de Mejor Película Animada, que en esa ocasión ganaría THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (La Bella y la Bestia).
Los ganadores en la categoría de Mejor Película Animada de 1993 al 2008 (Los del ese año corresponden a las producciones aparecidas en el 2007) son: ALADDIN, THE LION KING, POCAHONTAS, TOY STORY, CATS DON'T DANCE, MULAN, THE IRON GIANT, TOY STORY 2, SHREK, SPIRITED AWAY, FINDING NEMO, THE INCREDIBLES, WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT, CARS, RATATOUILLE.
Este 30 de enero sabremos qué producción, de entre las aparecidas en el 2008 se hace acreedor a este galardón. Asimismo, conoceremos a los ganadores en las demás categorías a lo largo de la ceremonia que se realizará en el UCLA'S ROYCE HALL en LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
Las producciones de animación con mayor cantidad de nominaciones han sido THE INCREDIBLES (2004), KUNG FU PANDA (2008) y WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT (2005) con 16, seguidas de RATATOUILLE (2007) con 13, FINDING NEMO (2003) con 12 y MULAN (1998) con 10. En lo referente a Televisión, THE SIMPSONS ha sido la serie de animación con más reconocimientos en la historia de los Premios ANNIE.
